Stay Rooted for Your Season of Fruitfulness
Rooted and built up in him, and established in the faith, as ye have been taught, abounding therein with thanksgiving. Colossians 2:7
Have you ever felt frustrated with the waiting process in your life? You’ve worked hard, prayed earnestly, and held on to your faith, but the results still seem distant. Have you ever found yourself asking God, “When will the fruit-producing season come in my life? How long must I wait before I see the change I’ve been praying for?”
If that’s where you are today, I want to encourage you to stay on track and not give up. The fruit-producing season you’ve been waiting for is closer than you think. In fact, you are probably in the most critical time of preparation right now. Let’s look at what God’s Word says about the process of growth and fruitfulness with a simple but powerful picture from nature.
The Tree by the Water, Rooted for Fruitfulness – Psalm 1:3
Psalm 1:3 gives us a powerful image of a person who is deeply rooted in God’s Word:
“He shall be like a tree planted by the rivers of water, that brings forth its fruit in its season; his leaf also shall not wither; and whatever he does shall prosper.” (Psalm 1:3)
Notice the word “season” in this verse. There is a time for fruitfulness, and it comes when the tree (or person) is firmly rooted in God’s Word. But just like a tree, the time for fruit doesn’t happen immediately—it comes in its season.
The Process of Growth: The Importance of Deep Roots Before Fruit
Think about a fruit tree. Before it ever bears fruit, there’s a process that takes place. The tree’s roots grow deep into the soil, where they draw nourishment from a steady and constant source. These roots are the foundation that supports the entire tree. Without strong, deep roots, there is no fruit.
While the roots are growing deep, the tree’s limbs begin to stretch upward and outward. But this process takes time. The tree must endure various seasons—heat, cold, rain, sleet, and snow—all of which test its strength and resilience. Yet, through all of this, the tree doesn’t rush to bear fruit. It focuses on growing its roots, on drawing from a deep, unshakable source of nourishment.
When you look at a tree, you don’t see the most important part—the roots. But the deeper and stronger the roots are, the more likely that tree is to withstand the harshest seasons and grow to its full potential. In the same way, God is preparing you now through deep spiritual roots.
If you feel like you’ve been waiting for a long time, here’s something to remember: the bigger the tree, the deeper its roots need to go. A tall, strong tree needs roots that extend far and wide into the soil for nourishment and stability. These roots give the tree strength against winds, storms, and difficult seasons, and they also protect the tree from pests and disease. Without deep roots, a tree might produce fruit prematurely, only to lose it when the storms come.
Colossians 2:7 – Rooted and Built Up in Christ
In Colossians 2:7, the apostle Paul encourages us to be “rooted and built up in Him” (Jesus Christ). The Greek word for “rooted” is rhizō, which means to be firmly planted, steady, and stable—like a tree with deep roots. This means that, as believers, we are meant to be anchored in Christ, drawing spiritual nourishment from Him and becoming unshakeable in our faith.
Just like a tree depends on its roots to nourish it, you need to depend on God’s Word and His Spirit to strengthen you in every season. Whether you’re in a season of waiting, difficulty, or growth, God is using this time to build your roots in Him.
Endurance Before Fruitfulness
Before you see the fruit you’ve been hoping for, you must first develop deep roots in God’s Word, in prayer, and in faith. Like that tree, you will face seasons of difficulty and challenge—times when it feels like nothing is happening or that progress is slow. But if your roots are firmly planted in God’s truth and His promises, you can endure those seasons and come out stronger on the other side.
The seasons of waiting and endurance are not wasted. They are preparing you for what’s ahead, developing your character and strengthening your faith. The deeper your roots, the greater your capacity to bear fruit when the time comes.
Embrace the Waiting Season
Instead of growing frustrated with the wait, take this time to thank God for the season you’re in. It’s not wasted time! Like a tree in its early stages, you’re sending your roots down deeper into God’s Word. You’re being prepared to withstand challenges and to bear fruit when the time comes.
Why is this important? Because, often, we are not ready for success when it comes too soon. If a tree were to bear fruit before it was strong enough, it wouldn’t survive the storms. Success that comes too quickly can be lost just as quickly if we don’t have the spiritual depth to maintain it.
Developing Deep Roots
While you are waiting for your fruit-producing season, it’s essential to focus on developing depth in every area of your life:
- Your mind: Renew your mind with God’s Word. Romans 12:2
- Your thinking: Align your thoughts with God’s truth. 1Corinthians 2:16 & 2 Corinthians 10:5
- Your character: Develop discipline, integrity, and patience. Galatians 5:22-23 & 2 Peter 1:5-8
- Your relationships: Build stronger, healthier relationships based on biblical principles. John 13:34-35
- Your behaviour: Put off the old man and put on the new man in Christ. Colossians 3:9-10
Remember, this time is not wasted. If you’re actively growing, learning, and strengthening your roots, you are preparing yourself for the fruit-producing season that is coming.
Avoid Complaining
Don’t fall into the trap of complaining during this waiting time. Complaining doesn’t speed up the process—in fact, it can delay the fruit you’re waiting for. Make the most of this time. Thank God that He is preparing you and that He is giving you the time you need to build a firm foundation in Him. If you complain about your current season, you’re wasting time. But if you choose to embrace it and allow God to deepen your roots, you will grow stronger, and your fruit will come at just the right time.
The Right Timing for Fruit
As the tree’s roots continue to grow and the seasons pass, eventually the tree blossoms, and fruit begins to appear. But this doesn’t happen overnight. The tree is patient and trusts in the process.
Similarly, as you stay rooted in Christ, you’ll begin to see the blossoms of what you’ve been waiting for. Your fruit-producing season will come, and when it does, it will be greater than you imagined. The deep roots you’ve developed in Christ will allow you to bear fruit that lasts, fruit that remains. God is working in you, even when you can’t see the results immediately. Trust in His timing—He knows exactly when your fruit-producing season will arrive.
Prayer & Declaration
Lord, thank You for this time of preparation. I trust that You are using this season to root me deeper in Your Word and to strengthen my faith. Help me to embrace this waiting time and use it wisely. I choose to thank You for the process, knowing that I am being prepared for a fruitful season ahead. I want to be firmly rooted in You so that I can stand strong in every season of life.
I declare that I am firmly rooted in God’s Word. As a result, I am steady, stable, and strong. I am nourished by Jesus Christ, and He is my constant source of strength. I will endure every season and outlast every storm. I am about to enter the finest fruit-producing season of my life. I will bear much fruit in my ministry, my family, and my business. My fruit-producing season is on the way Now! In Jesus name, Amen!
