Discovering Your God-Given Assignment

You Have a Purpose in the Body of Christ

“As each one has received a gift, minister it to one another, as good stewards of the manifold grace of God.” — 1 Peter 4:10

God has given every believer an assignment—a unique role, purpose or mission within the Body of Christ.

Just as every part of the human body has a different function, every believer has a valuable place within the Body of Christ. You don’t have to be someone else. God has equipped you to fulfil the assignment He has given you.

The question is:

Do you know your assignment?

Your assignment may look different from someone else’s. One person may teach, another may encourage, another may lead, another may serve, and another may give hospitality. Every gift is valuable.

The important thing is not comparing ourselves with others, but discovering what God has given us to do.

The Holy Spirit Helps Us Fulfil Our Assignment

The Holy Spirit comes alongside us to help, guide and empower us.

He:

  • Abides with us forever – John 14:16
  • Comforts us when life is difficult – 2 Corinthians 1:4
  • Teaches us God’s truth – John 14:26
  • Reminds us of what Jesus has said
  • Testifies of Jesus – John 15:26
  • Helps us understand and apply God’s Word
  • Empowers us to live out the calling God has given us

We don’t have to fulfil our assignment in our own strength. The Holy Spirit is with us to help us every step of the way.

Spiritual Function

Spiritual function is about aligning our lives with God’s purpose and fulfilling the assignment He has given us.

It involves growing in our relationship with God, allowing Him to work through us and learning to respond to life from a place of faith, hope and trust.

The Holy Spirit helps us function in our spiritual assignment by guiding us through each step.

The Holy Spirit Gives Us Power

God doesn’t call us to something and then leave us to accomplish it alone.

The Holy Spirit empowers believers to live the life God has called them to live. He gives us strength, courage and the ability to carry out the work of God’s Kingdom.

Philippians 2:13 says:

“For it is God who works in you, both to will and to work for his good pleasure.”

God is working in you—not only giving you the desire, but also enabling you to fulfil His purpose.

Your Assignment Matters

You may sometimes wonder whether what you do is significant. But every part of the Body matters.

Don’t compare your assignment with somebody else’s.

Don’t try to become something you were never called to be.

Instead, ask:

“Lord, what have You called me to do, and how can I faithfully fulfil it?” The Holy Spirit is there to help you discover it and walk in it.
