THE TRUE MEANING OF CHRISTMAS

Dear Brothers & Sister,

Christmas is not just a season. It is not just lights, trees, gifts, or family gatherings, it is a divine intervention. The moment when God wrapped His eternal love in human flesh and stepped into our world.

It is the moment when Heaven touched earth and when the eternal Word became flesh in the person of Jesus Christ.

Today I want to remind us of the true meaning of Christmas — why Jesus came, what His birth means, and how we can keep Him at the centre of this season.

CHRISTMAS IS ABOUT GOD COMING TO US

John 1:14 says, “The Word became flesh and dwelt among us.”

Isaiah 7:14 foretold, “A virgin shall conceive… and His name shall be called Immanuel — God with us.”

That means God didn’t shout His love from Heaven… He came down to show it.

We celebrate on December 25, even though Scripture doesn’t give a date, because early Christians chose this day to honour the incarnation, to point people from pagan winter festivals to Christ the true Light. Christmas focuses on the meaning, not the exact date: God with us (Isaiah 7:14).

We celebrate because Jesus’ birth is:

  • Hope — Light entered a dark world (Isaiah 9:2).
  • God’s presence — God came near (Matthew 1:23).
  • Salvation — A Saviour was born (Luke 2:11).
  • Fulfilled prophecy — Scriptures came to completion (Matthew 1–2).
  • God’s love revealed — The Father gave His Son (John 3:16).

Without His birth, there would be no cross, no resurrection, and no salvation. Christmas is the celebration of God’s greatest gift—Jesus Christ, the Saviour of the world. God with us.

CHRIST’S BIRTH BROUGHT LIGHT INTO DARKNESS

When Jesus was born, Israel was under Roman oppression, spiritual dryness, and moral confusion.

But Isaiah 9:2 declares:
“The people who walked in darkness have seen a great light.”

Jesus came as the Light of the world —
A light stronger than darkness, a hope stronger than despair.

And the angel said in Luke 2:10–11:
“I bring you good news of great joy… a Saviour is born!”

Christmas is the arrival of good news, not good feelings. It is the arrival of joy, not just celebration. It is the arrival of a Saviour, not just a baby.

WHY JESUS CAME — THE PURPOSE OF CHRISTMAS

Matthew 1:21 tells us:
“His name shall be called Jesus, for He will save His people from their sins.”

Jesus did not come to give us a holiday. He came to give us salvation.

John 3:16 —
“For God so loved the world that He gave His only Son…”

Christmas exists because of the love of God.

God loved…
God gave…
We believe…
We receive.

That is the message of Christmas.

GOD ALWAYS KEEPS HIS PROMISES

Hundreds of years before Jesus was born, God spoke through prophecy:

Micah 5:2 — He would be born in Bethlehem.
Isaiah 9:6 — He would be called Wonderful Counsellor, Mighty God, Prince of Peace.

Every prophecy was fulfilled in Jesus. If God fulfilled every promise about Jesus’ first coming, He will fulfil every promise about His second coming. Christmas reminds us: God keeps His word.

WHAT ABOUT SANTA CLAUS?

The modern Santa comes from St. Nicholas — a Christian bishop known for generosity and helping the poor. But Santa is cultural, not biblical. He must never replace Jesus. St. Nicholas pointed people to Jesus. We should do the same.

HOW WE RESPOND TO CHRIST THIS CHRISTMAS

Everyone in the Christmas story responded to Jesus.

A. The Shepherds Worshipped

Luke 2:20 — They glorified and praised God.
Let worship lead your season, not stress.

B. The Wise Men Gave

Matthew 2:11 — They brought gold, frankincense, and myrrh.
This Christmas, give Jesus your heart, your time, your obedience.

C. The Angels Proclaimed

Luke 2:10 — They announced the good news.
Share Christ with someone this season.

D. Mary Treasured

Luke 2:19 — She pondered these things in her heart.
Slow down. Reflect. Treasure Jesus above everything else.

Christmas is not about culture — it is about Christ.

CONCLUSION

Luke 2:11 declares: “For unto you is born this day… a Saviour, who is Christ the Lord.”

Jesus is:

  • God’s promise fulfilled
  • God’s presence revealed
  • God’s love demonstrated
  • God’s salvation offered

This is Christmas: Not the gifts under the tree, But the Gift who hung on the tree.

CLOSING PRAYER

Lord Jesus, we thank You for coming into the world as our Saviour, Redeemer, and King. Thank You for the hope Your birth brings — hope stronger than darkness, peace deeper than fear, and love greater than our sin. Help us keep You at the centre of our hearts, in our homes, amongst our families and friends, as we celebrate Christmas. May we allow You to shine through us in this season and always. We give You all the glory, honour, and praise. In Your precious name, Amen.

Happy Christmas — Christ is born!
